I absolutely love 1987’s The Monster Squad. As popular as The Goonies is, I’ve always felt that The Monster Squad was more my style. The scene that I love the most is near the end where the Squad is gathered at the town circle in front of the church. There the monsters descend upon them and the battle ensues. This scene is so amazing that it’s surprising that this is actually considered a kids movie. Just watch.
What I love about this scene is how the werewolf is literally blown to bits! Sean and his dad are the coolest dad and son team ever. The wolfmans limbs and other body parts blown everywhere, yet the wolfman just wakes up and pulls himself back together. I don’t think any movie has ever attempted this idea before but The Monster Squad pulls it off. I love how the wolfman’s upper torso arcs itself upward and it’s limbs kind of supernaturally pull themselves back. Then with a howl, he’s back in the game. So awesome. It really is the only movie that truly gives great detail on the concept.
Then the werewolf goes on a killing spree of cops and the only one to stop the terror is the teams bad ass Rudy. That tension before he looks the monster dead in the eyes is so cool. Rudy says “bang” and the wolfman drops to the ground, automatically turning back into human form. Rudy looks shaken as Sean and his dad approach. Rudy tells Sean “Told you, only one way to kill a werewolf.” You’re right Rudy and thanks to The Monster Squad we all know it’s true.
